Seal of Biliteracy
Salem Community High School is proud to offer our graduates the opportunity to earn the
Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy. This award is not based on seat time, it is earned by
showing proficiency equal to that of a college senior after only three or four years of
language study. Students who pursue the State Seal of Biliteracy must score intermediate
high in reading, writing, listening, and speaking on a nationally normed exam like the STAMP
or the AAPPL. Those who score in the intermediate mid range will be awarded the Illinois State
Commendation toward Biliteracy.
Encourage your child to enroll in the SCHS language program early and to continue throughout high school.
Earning the Seal of Biliteracy is the equivalent of two years language study at all Illinois public
universities, making the hours required for a minor in Spanish much less.
